Suspected bike thief changed clothes fleeing, police say | Crime
A child and a teen were arrested Wednesday after police said the two were seen attempting to steal bikes from a west Madison home.
The Madison Police Department said an 11-year-old and 15-year-old, both Madison boys, were seen by a neighbor near the 200 block of Acadia Drive at 10:33 a.m. taking two bicycles from a garage.
The neighbor saw the boys and yelled for them to stop, according to the report. Police said the 11-year-old stopped but the teen ran.
A construction worker nearby told police he spotted the teen ditching a bike and changing clothes near a fence line. The teen had another shirt and pants in his backpack. The worker saw police coming into the area and told police the boy had changed into a red sweatshirt and camouflage pants.
The teen was seen walking across the Jefferson Middle School soccer fields and was taken into custody, police said.
The clothing the teen had been wearing earlier, a blue top and white pants, was found in the backpack, the report said.
The boys were charged with party to a crime of burglary.
