Scammer posing as deputy fails to defraud seniors via phone | Crime
Police said a phone scammer attempted -- unsuccessfully -- last month to defraud two Madisonians by impersonating an officer.
The Madison Police Department said that on two separate occasions, two Madisonians received a call from a person calling himself Lt. Brian Harris and claiming to be with the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
According to the report, the scammer told an 85-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man, both west side residents, that they had missed jury duty and he had a warrant for their arrest. During the May 20 calls, he told them they could avoid jail time by immediately paying a $493 fine.
Police said neither the woman nor man took the bait and instead both contacted police.
The phone number the fraudster had been using, 608-293-3516, has been disconnected, according to the report.
